Stamina Buff
The percentage next to your stamina bar is earned by moving and lost by standing still — sprint to build it, idle and it drains away.
Running is the thing you do most on DayZed, and it gets cheaper the more you do it. That small percentage sitting next to your stamina bar is a buff you earn by moving. Sprint across the map and it climbs; stand around in a barn sorting your backpack and it drains back down.
This changed in the 2026-08-21 patch. It used to grow on its own just from staying alive, so a character who had survived a week arrived with it already maxed. It is now a measure of what you are actually doing, and it moves in both directions.
Reading the number
The percentage beside the stamina bar is your buff right now, and beside it is a trend marker telling you which way it is going: climbing while you sprint, climbing more slowly while you jog or swim, falling once you have been standing still, and falling faster once you have been standing still for a while. The game re-checks you every 60 s, so it reacts while you play rather than only after a relog.
Earning it
- Sprinting pays double. An hour of real sprinting is worth twice what an hour of ordinary movement is.
- Jogging, walking, swimming, climbing ladders and falling all count — anything where you are covering ground under your own power.
- It stops at 50 %. That is the ceiling; nothing pushes past it.
- Reaching the ceiling is a long job even at the sprinting rate, so treat it as something that builds across a play session rather than something you top up before a fight.
Losing it
- Standing still gets you about a minute's grace, so looting a body or reading the map costs you nothing.
- Stay still past that and the buff starts draining. Stay still for several minutes and it drains twice as fast.
- It never falls below zero, so going AFK costs you the buff and nothing worse.
When it is frozen
In a vehicle, unconscious, or mid-action — crafting, bandaging, swinging a melee weapon — the buff neither grows nor drains. Driving across the map does not count as movement, but it is not punished either: you get out with what you got in with.
Autorunning into a wall does not work
The game will happily report you as "sprinting" while you hold forward against a rock. The buff checks that you have actually covered ground since the last check, and treats a runner who has gone nowhere as standing still — so the buff decays. Wedging yourself against a wall to farm it leaves you worse off than simply playing.
It cuts the cost — it does not grow the bar
The buff reduces stamina drain, not stamina capacity. Your bar is exactly the same length it was on day one. What changes is how fast it empties: the same hill costs less, and a heavy loadout that used to gas you out halfway starts to feel manageable.
What goes wrong
- It went down while I was playing. You were standing still for more than a minute. Looting, crafting and base building all read as idle — that is normal, and moving again reverses it.
- I was sprinting and it still dropped. You were not covering ground: autorunning into terrain, swimming on the spot, or snagged on geometry.
- I expected a longer bar. You will never get one. Judge the buff by how long you can keep sprinting, not by the bar's size.
- Nothing seems to be happening. It moves in very small steps. Give it a session before deciding it is broken.
Not the cold bar
On the snow maps there is a second indicator that also grows as you survive — cold resistance. It does a completely different job and does nothing for your stamina. Two numbers moving near each other is normal.
