Workbench

Place a workbench, fit it with tools and looted upgrade modules, and craft every piece of DayZed furniture and every bunker wall from its recipe paper.

Since the 2026-08-21 update, almost every piece of DayZed furniture — and every bunker wall and door — is built at a Workbench. Hand-crafting them was removed. The bench itself is the one thing you still make in your hands, so it is the first thing you build in a new base: until it is standing, none of the rest exists.

Needs5 × Plank
10 × Nails
NoteThe only remaining hand-craft; every other kit is made at the workbench.

Place the Workbench Kit like any deployable — aim at the floor, confirm the green ghost, and it becomes a Workbench. There is no build timer.

Inside a bunker you may keep 2 benches at most. Give the bench clear floor space away from the entrance ladder and the doorways, and do not park it against a divider wall — furniture standing there blocks that wall's tier upgrade until you move it.

Fit it out

The bench top has three kinds of slot, and a recipe only runs when all three are satisfied.

  • Tools. Attach the real tool to the bench: hammer, hand saw, hacksaw, wrench, pipe wrench, pliers, screwdriver, hatchet, splitting axe, farming hoe, pickaxe, crowbar and more. Each recipe lists the ones it wants, and a variant of a listed tool normally counts.
  • Materials. Nails, planks and sheet metal each get their own slot, plus two slots for cinder blocks. Crafting eats straight out of those slots — fill them before you start a run.
  • Upgrade modules. Four slots, one each for the anvil, vise, drill and grinder.

Every tool and every upgrade module a recipe actually names loses 4 % of its health per craft. Bring spares. Kitting out a whole bunker will chew through a hammer, and a ruined tool stops the bench dead in the middle of a build — and since the modules are loot you cannot craft, a long locker run is a real bill on your anvil and vise. Modules that are only sitting in the bench for the speed bonus are not worn; only the ones the recipe demands.

The four upgrade modules

You cannot craft these. All four are loot, and they are what separates a beginner's bench from a finished one.

  • Drill — the hard one. It comes out of high-tier keycard-locked crates, so a drill means doing a quest run, not a loot run.
  • Vise, Anvil and Grinding machine — industrial loot. Warehouses, workshops, factory halls, repair yards.

Fitting a module does two things. Modules are what let the bench handle the higher-end furniture; every recipe also lists the hand tools it wants, so read the entry on the paper before you start hunting for materials. And each module speeds up every craft by 10 %, whether that recipe needs the module or not — so a fully kitted bench is worth finishing even for plain nails-and-planks work.

Browse and craft

Walk up to the bench and use Access Workbench on the paper lying on the bench top. That paper is the recipe book. It shows one recipe at a time: its name, the tools and modules it needs, and the material cost.

The prompt Scroll Recipes pages through the list with your next / previous weapon keys. When the paper shows what you want and nothing is missing, hold Craft Furniture and stand still. A craft takes 60 s on a bare bench, less the module bonus.

The finished kit appears on the bench top, not in your inventory, and there is no success message — the kit showing up is the confirmation. Only refusals pop a notification.

The bench's costs can be retuned by staff, so what you see here is what it is charging right now.

Only the wooden tier is crafted. Metal, concrete and Zaruunium are in-place upgrades of a placed wooden module, done with a hammer or hatchet — see Bunker walls, doors and tiers.

Comfort

A Jukebox plays music in your base. The bench gives you the kit; you place it, fit the internals and assemble it, and it runs off a Car Battery. Anyone can walk up and use one, but adding your own tracks to its playlist needs a VIP subscription.

What the furniture actually does

If you are furnishing a bunker, this is the part that decides what you build first.

  • Lockers are your private stash. Equipment Cabinet and Gun locker are the only pieces that take their own codelock (Attach Codelock). A locked locker cannot be opened or dismantled by anyone who does not know its code — including the clan mates who share your hatch code. The Gun Cabinet takes no lock, so treat everything in it as shared property.
  • Shelves are volume. Large Shelf and Small Shelf hold no cargo themselves — they are racks that carry Wooden Crate and Sea Chest, a wall of them on the large one. That is how you turn a bunker room into real storage instead of a floor covered in loose crates.
  • The fridge slows food decay and needs no power, no generator and no battery — place Small Fridge and it just works.
  • The generator is the bunker's power. Power Generator runs the bunker lights (Turn On Bunker Lights / Turn Off Bunker Lights) and charges Car Battery and Truck Battery in its own slots. Ceiling lamps without a generator are dead fittings.
  • Planter boxes only grow while the lights are on. A Planter Box underground with no generator is a box of dirt. Build the generator first — see Bunker power, lights and farming.

What goes wrong

  • A tool ruins mid-run. The bench does not warn you. Keep a spare hammer and saw in a crate next to it.
  • Loose materials on the floor do not reliably survive a restart. Nails, planks, sheet metal and cinder blocks left lying around may well be gone after a reboot. Keep them in a crate or a locker, not on the ground.
  • The bench does not use your pockets. A recipe spends what is in the bench's own material slots. A backpack full of nails does nothing for you if the nail slot is short.
  • You cannot dismantle furniture that still has something in it, and you must be authorised to build where it stands. Anything wearing a codelock comes apart only for someone who knows its code.

Changed your mind?

A kit still in your hands can be broken up with Salvage Kit — hold the key and it comes apart where you stand.

You get back about half of everything that kit's recipe costs, not just the nails: nails, planks, sheet metal and cinder blocks all come back in proportion, always rounded down, and the whole lot lands on the ground at your feet rather than in your pockets. Because it is rounded down and always short of the full price, scrapping is a way to recover a mistake, not a way to store materials — a recipe that only wanted one cinder block gives you no cinder block back at all.

Two things it will not do. A ruined kit refunds nothing, and a kit the bench cannot make is not scrappable at all — plain DayZ kits like a fence or a shelter have no bench recipe to price a refund from, so the prompt never appears on them. The workbench kit is the one exception that still works: it is hand-crafted, but it pays back a share of its planks and nails all the same.

Placed furniture dismantles back into its kit when it is empty and you are allowed to build there. The bench is no exception, once every slot is clear — tools, materials and modules all out. Hold a screwdriver (pliers, a knife, a hatchet or a saw do the job just as well) and it comes back up as a Workbench Kit, ready to carry somewhere better.
